Thanks to everyone who attended our teacher info session at Algonquin College on Oct. 25, 2016. It was a full morning (and our stomachs were also full, thanks to the lovely breakfast and coffee provided by Algonquin!).
This year’s session took place in Algonquin’s Applied Museum Studies labs, where teachers were able to see some of the tools of the trade up close, and hear about how Algonquin’s profs tackle a hands-on approach to the teaching of history. Thanks to Prof. Mike Wheatley for sharing his thoughts and expertise with our group!
It was a jam-packed two-hour workshop that also included an overview of the program as well as introductions to all of this year’s research mentors. On hand to talk about their roles as mentors were Dominique Marshall of Carleton, Romaine Honey of the Ottawa Public Library, Catherine Butler of Library and Archives Canada and James Hare of Algonquin College.
James also gave our teachers a tour of the College’s conservation labs so that they could see some student projects already in the works.
Finally, we also covered an overview of the program. Steering committee members Kristin Riddell and Ruth Bouttell discussed all of the NCHD categories, Alison Peters walked everyone through the registration process, Erin Gurski and Shawn Ruest filled everyone in on the great workshops we have planned for this year’s event and we also reviewed this year’s theme (Taking a Stand in History).
At the end of the session we had time for some Q&A — and also some prizes for those who attended (including a certificate for Algonquin’s Restaurant International, plenty of history books and a portfolio case courtesy of Algonquin College) as well as some flashy National Capital History Day mugs courtesy of Registrar Alison Peters.
